Perseverance is a theme that is best shown through the character of Sue Heck. In every episode there is some kind of obstacle that she has to overcome. In most situations where others would give up or move on, she keeps at it and never lets it get her down. Her characteristic of perseverance can be related to a lot of people in today's society. Many times she has bad luck but she doesn't let it get the best of her. She looks at the good things in the situation and keeps moving forward. For example, in season 1 episode 24, she gets hit by a deer and ends up on crutches right before she is going to try out for the no-cut cross-country team. Even though she is on crutches she still participates in the tryouts and withstands rain and wind on the track to complete her laps and make the team.
Another act of bad luck that she has to face is also in season 1 episode 24, when her picture doesn't appear in the school yearbook. While looking through the yearbook she finds a picture of her shoe and this seems good enough for her. Her mother feels that she is becoming accustomed to failure and it doesn't even faze her anymore. (aceshowbiz.com)

This can be related to our society today because everyday, there are those who don't give up even when they are faced with tough obstacles. They push forward and continue to wear a smile. Those who always try to spread their happiness to others and lend a helping hand.
